5 Ways to Create Lifelong Memories
The Art of Creating Lifelong Memories
One December evening, when I was a young child, my well intentioned parents wanted a few hours of freedom so they dropped me off at a strangers house. Babysitting co-ops were the original nanny. I resisted the entire way but upon approaching I knew I never wanted to leave. It was pure magic.
Tin lanterns speckled with moons and stars illuminated the walkway with flickering candlelight. The scent of cinnamon and baked apples enchanted me as I entered the big wooden doorway. To the left was a little step down room and a low ceiling that drew me in, something right out of the hobbit. Golden twinkly lights draped the corners and the rocking chair moved rhythmically to the sound of the harp being played by the glowing fireplace. This moment was quickly imprinted in my being forever. It was a delightfully opulent version of the cozy nights my mother would create mid winter. Blankets and books in front of the crackling fireplace, warm nourishing foods, baked goods and evenings of stories by the soft light. Winter became synonymous with cozy.
Moments like these touch our hearts and settle into our soul. They shape the way we feel in and about the world. They are the moments that inspire us to create magic and wonder for our own children, generation after generation. Whether baking in the fall, swimming in a favorite summer lake or reading that one book by the fire in new fuzzy pajamas. It's these moments we hold dear and look forward to all year. But they don't become our favorite yearly memories by chance, they are created. It doesn't take much to form a special memory for little ones but it does take a few key ingredients that will etch in their sweet minds magical moments of home, family, love and care, given by you.
First start with what YOU love.
We can only create true moments of connection and memory when we, as parents, are doing what we love. Children know when our actions are “shoulds” and not ones that bring us real joy. Find the creativity that inspires you and share it. For example- if you love sculpting, invite your children to join you in that activity.
Once you have decided what lights you up, begin and repeat.
It is the returning to your favorite seasonal activities the same time each year again and again that connects us to an experience. For example, you love singing carols in the winter. Each year put on your favorite winter costume, gather your friends and meander the streets caroling with hot apple cider, laughter and joy. And repeat, it will create joyful anticipation each year.
Engage the senses.
It is the sensory experiences that settle deep into a child's memory. The smells, the light, the sounds, the feelings of warmth, safety and love created through the environment. A pot of cedar simmering on the stove, cinnamon tea, the smell of homemade bread or cookies. Candles, a fire, even tealights in hand crafted lanterns. Use what you have, easy is always best.
Stay present.
We are quite accustomed these days to multitasking but allowing ourselves to be fully present in these unique and special moments is a gift to your children and yourself. Children quickly grow and move on but these are the precious moments that connect you always and will bring them home.
Stay flexible.
Repeating your traditions or family rituals in similar ways every year strengthens the sensations between the time of year and the way you celebrate it. However, try to remain flexible and make the necessary shifts as they grow and become more capable. Example, instead of surprising them with a special gift, engage them in helping create a special gift for someone else.
You may find you’ve been doing many of these intuitively but putting a bit more intention behind it will create lifelong memories your children will enjoy and draw upon forever.
